LED Spotlights vs Outdoor LED Floodlights: What’s the Difference?

If you’re confused between a spotlight and a floodlight, don’t worry. You aren’t the only one. People usually have this question when they’re looking for a viable lighting option for the outdoors.

Lighting plans are an essential part of any landscape design, because they you the look you want to achieve. The result is usually achieved by using a combination of spotlights, up-lights, and down-lights. And of course, the floodlights—but what’s the difference?

Spotlights are aptly named: they case narrow beams that are about as wide as 45 degrees in all. The beam from a spotlight is more concentrated. It’s also easier to control, which means if you want it to point somewhere specific, it definitely could do that.

Spotlights are commonly found above garage doors, doorways, trees, or statues. Since they’re focused on a small area, they are effective in bathing these specific individual features in light. They’re also great if you want to keep the light focused on your door without spreading out into the neighbor’s side—and nasty neighbors are very much a thing. Nasty neighbors fighting over very bright lights are also a thing—so beware of the light!

Spotlights are also a great idea if you want to create an aesthetic outdoor environment, because when light and shadow come together, they look pretty amazing!

Floodlights on the other hand have a beam that spreads to 120 degrees. The beam from a floodlight, obviously, illuminates a much larger area with the same lumen and wattage.

Floodlights are used to illuminate large swathes of land such as backyards, patios, lawns, gardens, and the like. They’re pretty good at lighting up huge spaces and can be used more effectively if you want to go with one light instead of many (spotlights), which is a more cost-effective option.
